MERCOSUR - It lacked a Guideline for the Workers

The FELATRABS feels obligated to support all action of the governors of Latin America that glimpses, and strengthens, the idea of integration as an instrument to face the modern challenges of the world. Nevertheless, it considers it important to assume a critical position when such initiatives do not result in practical attitudes for the suffering peoples of the region. From 15 to 17 December, the Chiefs of State of 31 countries of Latin America met in the Northeast of Brazil.
Four conferences were simultaneously organized under the pretext to unite efforts and to construct consensus, although the final reports indicated meagre advances in that perspective. The great absentee during the discussions was the Latin American worker. In the hard game of international politics, the present leaders chose to dedicate the majority of time to the demonstration of unity, to the reaffirmation of debates against North American imperialism, in short, the majority of the time was not dedicated to the subjects related to the creation of new means of employment, to the stability of the workers, to the conditions of work, better wages, decent retirements, health and education. What was, in the end, the time dedicated to the definition of joint strategies towards the preservation of employment during theses three days of meetings? Did they discuss the necessity of common effort so that the Latin American labour-markets suffer less from the effects of the crisis that dominates the economic world? Questions, unfortunately, that were left without answers after the discussions that occurred on the Coast of Sauipe, in the Brazilian Northeast coast. Our fear is that a great opportunity to organize a common thought within the countries in defining strategies to battle the world-wide economic crisis is lost. And, even worse, that it is not going to be soon for another to arise with equal characteristics, which would be regrettable.
